Idea generation and organization techniques refer to various strategies or methods that help people to create new ideas, organize them and visualize them in a more effective way, among these techniques we can include brainstorming, mind mapping, scampering, flow charts, etc.

A mind map is an image of different elements, used as key points to give specific information or branch the central point, the mind map was invented in the late 60's by Tony Buzan a prominent psychologist who using images, color and key words in hierarchy. he demonstrated that memory, learning or processing and retention skills can be improved with mind maps and the connections of this.


 

when creating a mind map, we start in the center of the page with the main idea or the topic to be addressed, and we point outwards in different directions, creating an organized structure with keywords and images, a mind map is very useful when brainstorming, it helps us to organize the information in a better way, in order to achieve a deeper learning, We can also use a mind map to take notes, to prepare for an exam, to capture new ideas, or to prioritize something. The mind map is characterized by having a key or main idea, it can be represented with words or image, from that idea arise more known as secondary ideas, it is common to use lines to join ideas and mind maps summarize the topic without going too deep into them. 

How can the use of mind maps help us? 

  1. Helps us to improve our memory.
  2. Allows for better retention of information through images, colors, and sign
  3. Facilitates comprehension.
  4. It is very useful when presenting presentations, school work and assignments.
  5. Helps to summarize complex topics. 

What guidelines should we follow in the creation of a mind map?

Tony Buzan suggests the following guidelines for creating mind maps:
  • use pictures, symbols and more throughout the map.
  • select key words.
  •  lines should be connected starting from the central image.
  • use lots of colors on the map, for visual stimulation.
  • have your own style.
  • emphasize and demonstrate links.
  • use hierarchy to keep the mind map clear and orderly.

Some practical applications of mind maps are the following:

  • Project planning: it helps us to organize, establish and visualize in a better way the sequence of the project.
  • Learning and memorization: it is very practical at the moment of learning by summarizing the information, pointing out the key points and relating them to each other.
  • Idea generation: it allows to organize ideas hierarchically and visually.
  • Problem solving: it allows to point out and identify the problem in a better way, analyzing the root of the problem and the different solutions.
  • Visual presentations: it is of great use as visual support, applied in presentations or conferences, to facilitate the retention and comprehension of the information. 




In which areas can we apply the use of a mind map? 

  • Educational environment: teachers and students can organize the information they want to learn or teach or to evaluate a topic.
  • Work environment: in this particular example the work team devises a marketing plan focusing on social media strategies.




  • Personal environment: it is very useful if we want to organize our thoughts, goals or problems.


How to apply the mind map in: 


Creative writing: suppose we want to create a story, let's organize our ideas from the main point, to the center of the map we add the title of the story, ''the magician and the enchanted forest'' from here we start to break down our story in branches, as it could be:

  • Characteristics of the forest: tall green trees, waterfalls, abundant magical flora and fauna.
  • Appearance of the wizard: short, with a white beard, always has a wand.
  • Function of the wizard: to obtain all the magic of the forest.
  • Characters: fairies, elves, trolls, and a young lost girl.
  • Conflicts: fairies that protect magic.
 And so we can draw more branches that detail the story. 


Problem solving: In this example the problem will be that ''a product is not selling'' will also be our title on the map, let's start branching out looking for the possible solutions, for example:

  • Publish the product on social media and improve its visibility.
  • Place the product in a busy and visible store.
  • Advertise on the radio.
  • Offer a discount for purchases.
  • Offer an enthusiastic customer service.




Project development:in this example our project will be the ''opening of a pastry shop'' in the center of the city, to organize our project we apply the use of the mental map we are going to add branches with the areas that we want to organize, the branches can be:

  • Competition: we will include in this branch the public, suppliers, similar stores and more.
  • Location of the store and aesthetics: we will consider different options of designs for the store, the order inside, furniture, decorations, etc.
  • Permits: here we will point out all the permits legally required for the opening of the premises.
  • Personnel: we will manage how many workers we need, profiles and training.
  • Advertising: we will address marketing strategies to publicize the store, presence in social networks and more.
  • Finances: we will evaluate budgets, income and expenses.

this is a way to visualize in an organized way when developing a project.
